Chess I is geared for players ages 6 and up who do not know the rules of chess or who feel they would benefit by review and further practice. Concepts to be covered include basic rules of chess, relative values of pieces, check vs. checkmate vs. stalemate, the three phases of the chess game, development and basic checkmates. You've mastered the concepts of Chess I, so what do you do now? Take Chess II of course! This class is for those who know the rules but aren't sure how to use them to their best advantage. Topics to be covered will include an introduction to tactics (en prise, fork, pin, skewer, discovery, undermining and overload), more basic mates and strategies that can be utilized for each of the three phases of the chess game. This class focuses on skills needed for tournament play: reading pairing sheets, recording results, chess notation, use of a chess clock and the rules of tournament play. Players will have the opportunity to compete in a simulated tournament environment. Recommended for players who have completed Chess II or those who know basic chess rules and tactics. This fun beginning level course will offer an introduction to acrylic colors for kids. A variety of painting styles will be used throughout this class including a canvas painting. Students must provide brushes (round # 0 & 2 , flat # 2,3 & 6 and a filbert # 8). The instructor will provide all other materials.
